How to Stand Out with a Narrative Bio

Having a compelling and engaging bio on your social profiles, website or anywhere else is essential in our world where anyone can look us up online. As people, we can be scared to share more about our personal or professional selves because we’re self-conscious or fearful of judgment, what others might say.

Bios gives us an opportunity though to take control of our narrative. We can share who we are and what we do from a perspective of confidence with personal touches. So how do you make yours stand out?

It’s hard to find the sweet spot for the right way a bio should sound. People struggle to find a tone that isn’t too over the top, isn’t too jargon-y or lists out things. We struggle to find a narrative that shares who we are as a person, but also fits our professional persona.

A narrative bio creates a story around educational and professional experiences that shares the evolution of how you came to your present moment and what you’re doing now. The key is to share your why. This is the narrative that drives a more personal story about your motivation or passion behind pursuing your current profession or career. It gives others a chance to relate to you on a more universal level, because everyone has motivations, dreams, passions.

A lot of people miss this added layer of depth in their bios, just sharing about their position and what they work on without sharing the why.

With AI becoming a larger presence in our society and culture, it’s so important as humans that we showcase our humanness, our personalities. And your bio is a perfect place to highlight that. A lot of people think bios, especially on LinkedIn, have to stay strictly professional.

For about a year or so, I’ve been an advocate of sharing more personal as well as business posts here on LinkedIn. It’s a social media site, one geared towards business, but business intersects with so much about society and culture that it seems only natural our personal lives would as well.

Share about what’s important to you in your bio, and if your personal care routine or pets help keep you going, then it’s something to consider putting in there.

If you’re struggling to write a bio for LinkedIn, website, or your business, then you found a bio-writing wizard to help you.

At MP Storytelling, I love crafting narrative bios for people to share their professional and personal accolades. Don’t feel like it has to sound boring or you need to include a lot of jargon words. There are about so, so many words in the English language. We can find the right ones and tone to fit your audience.

Engage and share your confident self. Don’t feel like your professional and personal life have to compete. They can coexist. That’s one of the things I love about bio-writing. People tend to be a little too close to home when it comes to sharing who you they are. I have an eagle’s eye view for what to include and how to bring it together.
